What is Cultural Intelligence?

Cultural Intelligence (CQ) is the capability to work effectively across
differences — whether those differences are national, ethnic, generational, professional, behavioural, or organizational.

The concept was formally developed by Christopher Earley and Soon Ang and later operationalized through research by the Cultural Intelligence Center.

At its core, Cultural Intelligence is not about memorizing facts about other
cultures.

It’s about developing the mindset and skills to:

  • Notice differences without judgment

  • Interpret behaviour more accurately

  • Adapt communication and leadership style appropriately

  • Build trust across diverse perspectives
